Journalistic Work

Past Work

Listen here to an episode of Mosaic—The Public’s Radio podcast on immigration—that I reported and produced.

Susan Mills is the author of On the Wings of a Hummingbird, a novel about a teenager named Petra who travels from her small Guatemalan village to the U-S, fleeing gang violence. Before writing the book, Mills was an immigration attorney for twenty years, and has prepared thousands of asylum cases for Central American immigrants. The Public’s Radio Community Producer Pearl Marvell spoke with the Susan about the book and how her experience as an attorney informed her work. Read and/or listen to the conversation here.

Mosaic is The Public’s Radio podcast focused on reporting on and representing all immigrant communities of Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. Every week we feature an essay about and for these communities. Essays are edited, recorded and produced by Pearl Marvell. Click here to access Mosaic’s website.

Three Jobs, but no apartment: One Undocumented Worker’s Struggle to find housing in Newport

Through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing remained constant : the skyrocketing property values on Aquidneck Island.

As people fled crowded cities, Aquidneck Island residents sold their homes at prices that hadn’t been seen before. Many who chose not to sell rented their properties at higher rates.

The Hispanic and Latino community has been particularly affected by these soaring prices. Particularly important for the island’s hospitality industry — as they make up a large percentage of the cleaners, landscapers and restaurant staff on the island — many in the community find themselves facing eviction notices and wondering whether they can afford to remain on the island or not.

Whirlwind II: Innovation Mixed With Historical Design

Yarrow Thorne had been searching for a while to find a way to connect with the ocean and his family’s history. He had grown up with stories about sailing, but during his childhood,  “we really weren’t a boating family.” He says.

“It was very much folklore,” when it came to the family’s maritime history. “ It was always in my blood to go to sea and to learn how to sail.” He  continues.

He heard stories about his grandfather building a J-boat called Whirlwind, which intrigued him greatly.

“When my grandfather passed away, I sort of took it on as a personal interest to gather any and all information about this boat.” He says.
